BACKGROUND

Latin American countries are at different stages of emergency care development, with some on their third, fourth, or fifth decade of recognizing emergency medicine as a specialty and others just starting the specialty at this time. This, in addition to shared culture, languages, and history, offers an opportunity for advancement of emergency care in the region through collaboration. Furthermore, Latin American emergency care authors often face barriers to publishing in international peer-reviewed journals, including cost, language, and lack of experience and mentorship with academic writing and the peer-review process. The Latin American Journal of Emergency Care emerged in response to the lack of a region-wide peer-reviewed journal in Latin America and the desire to promote scholarship, regional collaboration, and mentorship through the peer-review process to improve emergency care in Latin America.
