Abstract

The use of point-of-care ultrasound has become a routine part of the management of critically ill patients, now considered the fifth pillar of the physical examination and an essential tool not only for diagnosis and monitoring but also for the execution of procedures. Unfortunately, not all Emergency Departments and Intensive Care Units are equipped with ultrasound devices featuring multiple transducers, particularly in developing countries. Often, only the linear transducer for central venous catheterization is available, or the attending physician carries their own portable ultrasound. The aim of this narrative review is to describe the various applications of the linear transducer in critically ill patients.
