Objective: To evaluate if the waiting time for intensive care unit admission due to bed availability is a predictor of mortality in severe Covid-19 patients. Methods: Observational, descriptive, analytical, retrospective cohort study using medical records of patients admitted to the intensive care unit dedicated to Covid-19 patients at a hospital in Alto Vale do Itajaí (SC). Results: A total of 159 medical records were analyzed. The most common comorbidities were systemic arterial hypertension (64.2%), diabetes mellitus (37.7%), and dyslipidemia (28.3%). Waiting time in the Emergency Department exceeding 72 hours was associated with higher mortality rates with statistical significance of p < 0.01. Conclusion: Waiting time emerged as an important predictor of mortality. Therefore, measures that facilitate prompt care and early referral of patients to the intensive care unit are necessary, considering the rapid decline in survival over time.
